Artetta
Caregiver for sister
Artetta cared for her younger sister, Vonne, during her battle with ALS. Throughout her sister’s illness, Artetta fought along side her to ensure she was receiving the best care. Her Nominator, Lily Cola, Care Services Social Worker at ALS Association, North Carolina Chapter, shared with us just how dedicated she was to Vonne. “Artetta remained strong, and was the pillar that would advocate for additional caregivers, insurance options, and more.”
But even the strongest caregivers need a break, and in this case, time to process grief. For Artetta, having few sun-filled days at the coast with her daughter was a welcomed gift.
LPH: What did this trip mean to you?
The trip was awesome. Thanks to our hosts, Kate and Manfred, and to the social worker at the Duke ALS clinic for the nomination. Loved the "starry" night in the bedroom and the swing on the front porch. Allowed me to remember those great times growing up with my sister--I lost my sister to ALS within 4 1/2 months of diagnosis.

LPH: Why is it important for caregivers to have a getaway?
Getting away allows the caregiver permission to take a break and realize that "they" can take a break and getaway.
LPH: How do you feel after having some time to recharge?
This trip touched both my daughter and myself. We felt refreshed and relaxed with a clearer thought about getting back home. The Little Purple House is the perfect place to visit and be transported back to a slower time allowing each of us to relax. When the horse carriage went by, we waved from the porch- so much fun! We were able to walk to eat on the riverfront, admiring the many historic homes on the way. We spent the whole day Saturday at the beach. Those getting an opportunity to stay/visit the cottage will be very blessed and I know they will find the calmness that we did at our visit.
