People who could really use a break.
Guests at the Little Purple House are people who are primary caregivers of an ill family member. Nominations are based on the treatment, prognosis, mental well-being, and financial hardship resulting from a diagnosis or other medical crisis. They are people who could most certainly use a break from what the day-to-day has become as they deal with a devastating ordeal, and would benefit greatly from spending time in the peaceful surroundings of the cottage.
Guests may also be people who have lost a loved one within the past year and served as their primary caregiver during that person’s illness. Often, caregivers are unable to get away until after the person they were caring for passes. We offer respite visits to these individuals as a way of putting a “bright spot” on the horizon and to help them take the time they need to process their grief and what they have been through in the preceding months.
Experience
Prior to becoming a respite cottage, the Little Purple House hosted holiday travelers and maintained a 5-star review rating from guests. Although we have a lot of experience creating a lovely vacation destination for visitors, we enlisted the help of the experts from established organizations, such as the Doris S. Tanger Center for Patient & Family Support and “For Pete’s Sake” Cancer Respite Foundation, to transition successfully into a respite cottage.
Currently, we only accept respite guests via referrals from nominating partners in order to ensure that those who are awarded with a no-cost respite visit to the Little Purple House truly are part of the audience we are trying to serve.
